A coastal town near the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram, Poovar is 18 km from Kovalam and 27 km from Trivandrum. One of the most popular places to visit in Kovalam is this beach, surrounded by backwaters on the other side.
Poovar is a natural wonder where the sea, lake, river, and beach meet, near the Neyyar River estuary. Known for its glowing sand, serene surroundings, and refreshing breeze, Poovar is a lovely island with long stretches of glowing sand. Historically, Poovar was a trading center where timber, sandalwood, ivory, and spices were traded. King Solomon's trading ships landed in Ophir, according to legend. According to another legend, Moosa Marikkar gave Maharaja Marthanda Varma protection from his enemies here.
Known for its lovely beaches, Poovar is a major tourist destination. A short distance from Kovalam Beach, Poovar Beach separates the River Neyyar from the Arabian Sea and is quite spectacular. Kovalam sightseeing packages include swimming from October to May, so it's the perfect spot to relax and take in the exotic beauty of the beach. Poovar Beach is only accessible by boat from June to August because of the monsoon and heavy currents.
It's surrounded by canals and the Neyyar River. It's got tons of flora and fauna. You can spot water birds like Kingfisher, Brahminy Kite, Night Heron, Sea Egret, Black Darter, Indian Cormorant, Eagle, and a lot more while cruising through the Poovar backwaters.
