Kerala, God’s own country is blessed with a unique Architecture which stand head and shoulders above other traditional architectures in the world. The Sankaramangalam Tharavad located at Eraviperoor is one of the finest examples of traditional Kerala residential Architecture that exists today. To any inquisitive mind, this traditional house appears to be a poetry in wood and the delight with which the creators, of this wooden house of a different era, were able to build and create built spaces in harmony with their surroundings, is worth experiencing.
This Tharavad (traditional house) reflects the unique wooden construction system of the region and is characterized by a high level of craftsmanship and building skill. Climate played a major role in deciding the Architectural character of the building. The built form makes a thrishala (Three Shalas) in its architectural configuration and its vocabulary is built upon components such as steeply pitched roof with open gables at both ends, verandas on all sides and deep overhangs. Architecture of Sakaramangalam Tharavad does not manifest by itself, it begins with the mind conceiving a question, rationalizing the context, understanding the ethic and ends with the imagining of a solution and a purposeful construction respecting the environment created by our great Tachans aimed at apprehending truth underlying beauty and bounty of nature. This homestead is a must see to anyone who is an ardent lover of tradition and Architecture. It is now open for homestay.
