It's a mangrove lake with an area of 2114 square meters, and the longest lake in India. Vembanad (Vembanad Kayal or Vembanad Kol) is the largest lake in Kerala. Ramasar sites in India are only second to the Sunderbans in West Bengal. The lakes are called Vembanadu Lake in Kottayam, Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, and Kochi Lake in Kochi. It's spread over several districts in Kerala. The Kochi Lake portion has a bunch of small islands including Vypin, Mulavukad, Vallarpadam, and Willingdon Island. Kochi Port is built around Vallarpadam and Willingdon Island.
